Family native of Le Locle where it is mentioned since the second half of the 14th century, bourgeois of Valangin from 1508 and from Neuchatel since 1659.
It spread to La Brévine, Dombresson, Basel and the canton of Vaud.
Jean-Jacques Sandoz, son of David, first mayor of La Chaux-des-Taillères (Brévine), was ennobled in 1657 by Henry II of Longueville.
His son Henry having married Anne-Marie de Bonstetten, the seigneuries of Travers, Noiraigue and Rosières entered his family who died in the males in 1852.
Jean-Henri de Sandoz (1698-1753), descendant of a younger son of Jean-Jacques above, having married Sarah-Elisabeth Rollin, the last of his family, took, as well as his descendants, the name of SANDOZ-ROLLIN .
His son David received from the King of Prussia the title of Baron, who was not ratified at Neuchâtel.
Charles-Louis of Sandoz, last member of a collateral branch of this same branch, adopted in 1873 his grand-nephew, Alphonse Franel (1809-1892) who took the name and weapons of Sandoz.
His son Charles died in 1904 without posterity.
It is to other branches that belonged Henri Sandoz (1730-1820), of Le Locle, colonel in the service of France, who was ennobled by Louis XVIII and whose son died in 1859 without posterity.
Claude-François Sandoz lieutenant-general in the service of Holland who was ennobled in 1776 by the Emperor Joseph II and died without posterity.
Isaac SANDOL, stem of the SANDOL-ROY family (see this name).
Weapons: a hammer placed in pal, accompanied by initials and two tiger flowers moving from a mount of three cuttings.
According to HTJG., Azure, the hammer poured silver and accompanied by two gold stars.
The same author also holds the hammer by a faith that will become the emblem of the family and has given rise to many variations.
In general we find: "Azure with the faith of money"
The field is sometimes "gules to the faith placed on a fess"
that the R. B. give "Azure in field of gold and accompanied in chief of a crescent, in base of a flame Gules.
On the tomb of the notary David Sandoz, mayor of La Brévine (1656) "the faith is accompanied by a seedling of fleurs-de-lis and two pointed palms"
On a stone of D.-H. Sandoz (1783), there are only "two stars in chief and a mount of three peaked".

A drawing of Huguenin (late eighteenth century) gives weapons similar to those of
Sandol, but with "the azure field".

Jean-Henry de Sandoz-Rollin (1698-1753), knight of the Générosité, wears "quartered silver and the same at the cross of the Générosité d'or, with the chordate band Gules and Or Brocant on the all ".

A Sandoz-Travers seal, probably that of a son of Jean-Jacques, Sandoz ally, carries a quartered Sandoz-Travers and Sandoz.
The letter of nobility granted in 1776 to General Sandoz bears "Azure to the faith of money".

SANDOL, SANDOL-ROY. - Branch of the Sandoz family, bourgeois of Valangin (1508) and Neuchâtel (1659). Abram Sandol (1722-1802), a State Councilor, was knighted with his father Isaac in 1754 and authorized to bear the name of SANDOL-ROY, because he had married the only daughter of Simon de Roy.
Weapons: "Gules a faith of money, accompanied by sixteen diamonds paid, eight in chief and eight in base. The rhombuses of the point are sometimes replaced by flames.
On the tomb of Isaac Sandoz (Sandol) (1643-1716) at the Temple of Locle, the diamonds of the chief are replaced by two diamond points.
Crest: a dextrochère holding an ax.
The arms conceded during the ennoblement are a combination of the arms of Roy and Sandol: "quartered one and four Gules three silver stars arranged in front and azure gold sautoir, open abyss; on everything from ermine to natural faith ".
Crest: three ostrich feathers Argent, Gules and Azure.
